Tips to Guide Your Home Search
- Do your research. Decide what features are must-haves and which are not, what areas or communities you prefer, and how much you’d be willing to spend.
- Be realistic. It’s OK to be picky, but don’t be unrealistic with your expectations. There’s no such thing as a perfect home unless you build one. Make a short priority list. More priorities mean fewer choices.
- Be financially prepared. Review your credit report. Get prequalified for a mortgage or prepare to show proof of funds if you plan to pay cash.
- Opinions from unqualified people will drive you crazy and create loads of uncertainty. Be careful who you ask for advice. The final decision is yours.
- Think long term. Are you looking for a starter house with plans to move up in a few years, or do you hope to stay in this home for a longer period? This decision may dictate what type of home you’ll buy as well as the type of mortgage terms that will best suit you.
- Get a home inspection and a survey.
- Get help from a REALTOR®. Hire a real estate professional experienced in buyer representation.
